How to Make Hanging Laundry Hamper

Hanging Laundry Bag Tutorial

Do you know what was my top priority when setting up my children’s bedroom? Lots and lots of space to play! That means least amount of furniture. We got mattresses and a small shelf for storing toys.

But there was one thing that kept bugging me…Laundry Hamper! It took me about a year until I found a solution to keep the hamper out of sight but still in their room, and to keep the floor clean.

Hanging it on the wall means asking husband to do the drilling job (and we all know what it meant. Read my previous post about it).  So what other options did I have?

Well, we have door hangers on almost every door in our home and let me tell you, these are the best things ever!!! No drilling, no holes, just place these hangers on door and hang as much stuff you want!

We got our first door hanger for SAR. 5 from Majamma-al-Shamil few years ago. We even took some to Pakistan and everybody loved it. But the doors in our new home were a tad thicker, so those did not fit. We found them at Bravo Int’l Store for SAR. 17 and more. They were a perfect fit.

So why not use it to hang clothes hamper? A good idea, don’t you think? First to figure out how to hang so it is on child’s level. If only I could make it hang on something else first and then connect to hanger. Yeah! That will work!

The thing that was laying around the house, fulfilling no purpose came to my mind… wooden dowel! I would first hang the hamper on dowel, then on hanger. It came with Ikea blackboard stand and was not of any use to us. But you do not need to buy a whole blackboard just to get a dowel, you can buy it from Jarir bookstore

They have dowels in different thicknesses.
So, let’s make it!

Things you will need:

  • Light Cotton fabric (its airy but not too light so it should be able to take the weight of clothes) 1 meter/little bit more than a yard
  • Wooden Dowel half inch think and 20 inches long
  • Grosgrain Ribbon long enough to hang dowel on hanger
  • Matching Thread
  • Pencil
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Pinking Shears or Serger
  • Measuring Tape
  • Iron
  • Sewing Machine
  • And Pattern for Opening of Hamper and ofcourse...
  • Door Hanger

Preparing your pieces

Prewash and Iron your fabric.

Download the pdf file and select “Actual Size” while printing. Check if the printout is correct by measuring the 1” test square with your measuring tape or Ruler.
1 inch test square

Cut out the Oval piece following outer line.

From fabric, cut two pieces measuring 18” x 30” for bag, one 18” x 11” for facing and one 6” x 21” strip for making loops.

How to Sew Loops

With right sides together, fold strip fabric in half lengthwise and pin on long edge.

Sew with half inch seam allowance on long side.
 Press.

Turn it to right side.

Keep seam in center and press again.

Cut tube into 3 equal pieces.

How to Sew Hamper

Take facing, fold one long edge to half inch, then fold raw edge under and pin.

Sew hem.

On top side of one bag piece, place facing piece, right sides together and matching corners.

Fold in half lengthwise and press to form a crease in middle. Open the fold.

Place paper pattern on crease, matching its crease line, 3 inches away from top. Pin the paper on fabrics.

Secure with as many pins as you can so none of the layer move.

Thread your machine and decrease your stitch length to 2 so you can rotate while sewing easily.

Sew along the paper template, rotating the pieces with both of your hands. Overlap stitching when you finish.

Take it out, trim threads. Take out all the pins and give stitching a good press.

Make a cut with scissors inside of oval and trim fabric with pinking shears all around inside of oval, it should be close.

Turn the facing piece towards seam/inside of oval and press it. Do it in short lengths.

Under-stitch on facing. Press again.

from back

Turn facing towards back and give it a good press to reveal perfect oval.

On right side of bag piece, topstitch on edge of oval. Press.

Fold each prepared loop in half, seam sides together. Pin and mark 3” from fold-line.

Place and pin one loop on each top corner of right side of front piece, folded side towards the oval. Place the third loop in the middle.

The markings on loop should be half inch away from the edge of bag piece.

Sew each loop in place.

Place back piece of bag on front, right sides together and pin top and bottom sides.

Sew with half inch seam allowance.

Press and pin the remaining two sides. Sew and press those as well.

Serge on seams or trim with Pinking Shears.

Trim upper two corners.

Turn bag to right side and press open all the seams.

Make the gusset

Turn bag to wrong side.

Open up the bottom corners so both seams match with each other and you can see a triangle forming.

Measure 4 inches from one corner of triangle to other, make sure 2” marking of ruler is on middle seam. Draw a line from pencil.

Pin it and do the same for other bottom corner.

Sew on these lines, back-stitiching at beginning and end to secure. Trim the threads and finish the seams with Pinking Shears or Serger.

Press the seams. Turn bag to right side and press again.

Finishing the Hamper

On top side of Bag, we will do a reinforcing stitching, quarter inch away from edge. Press it.

Pull the dowel through loops and your Hamper is Ready!

Take your Grosgrain Ribbon, tie its end to dowel between 1st and 2nd loop, hang it on hanger and check how high or low you want to hang the hamper.

Cut ribbon accordingly.

Tie the other end of ribbon to dowel between 2nd and 3rd loop.

As you can see, its on the perfect level for children to put their dirty clothes away!

Now all the laundry is already sorted by children and it is out of sight as well.

Do not forget the Neat Floor!

Variations

For Adults

You can make this hamper wider and longer for adults, and you will not need the dowel as well. Just hang the hamper on hanger directly. But measure the placement of loops beforehand according to the hooks on your hanger.

Make 1 hamper for 2 children

Instead of making 2 hampers for 2 children separately, you can make one in wider size.

Make 2 openings as well and stitch down in middle of hamper to create 2 sections. Assign each section to a child. You can let them decorate it with felt but use Fabric Glue or UHU that comes in tube. Or you can stitch it in place.
And YES! You can wash this hamper in your washing machine!

So, what do you think? Which version will you make?  Don’t forget to share your photos of Hanging Laundry Hamper with me, I will add those on this post with your name.
